Russian National Guard deputy director nominated for emergencies minister - MP Khinshtein

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Deputy Alexander Khinshtein has said that Alexander Kurenkov, who may head the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, has so far been deputy director of the Russian National Guard.

"Candidate for the position of emergencies minister, Maj. Gen. Alexander Kurenkov, has so far served as deputy director of the Russian National Guard," Khinshtein said on Telegram.

Kurenkov was in charge of military training in the Russian National Guard, and prior to that he served in the Federal Security Service and the Federal Guard Service.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed Alexander Kurenkov's candidacy to the Federation Council to be appointed as emergency situations minister, a source in the upper house of parliament told Interfax.

Alexander Chupriyan is currently acting emergencies minister. He was appointed acting minister on September 10, 2021, after previous minister Yevgeny Zinichev died in an accident during a departmental exercise in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
