Russia closes office of CBC as response measure - Foreign Ministry
MOSCOW. May 18 (Interfax) - Russia has decided to close the Moscow office of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a response measure, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
"A decision has been made on response measures - I'd stress that it's response measures - to Canada's actions, namely on the closure of the Moscow office of the Canadian state broadcasting corporation CBC, including the annulment of the accreditations and Russian visas of its journalists," Zakharova said at a press briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.
This move was prompted by Canada's ban on broadcasts of RT and RT France, she said.
"We said we would respond, call it symmetrically, analogously, tit-for-tat, whatever - in other words, appropriately. And now we're responding. We've warned about that repeatedly. We've said that such unilateral restrictive measures trampling upon freedom of speech principles and obstructing normal work of Russian media wouldn't remain unanswered. This should be clear to everyone. Our reaction is inevitable," she said.
