Situation on CSTO's southern borders alarming, set of security measures necessary - Kyrgyz president

BISHKEK. May 16 (Interfax) - The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) should remain focused on the problems of Afghanistan, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said.

"I believe our attention and analysis should always remain centered on the problems of Afghanistan," Japarov said at a CSTO summit on Monday.

"The situation on the CSTO's southern borders remains quite alarming chiefly because of unhindered activities of radical terrorist groups in certain Afghan provinces, whose foreign sponsors have far-reaching plans with regard to Central Asia," Japarov said.

He called for employing a broad range of political-diplomatic and military-technical security measures, while at the same time providing humanitarian aid to the Afghan people.

The CSTO summit is marking the 30th anniversary of the Collective Security Treaty and the 20th anniversary of the CSTO's establishment.

The CSTO is comprised of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Tajikistan. Armenia is currently holding presidency of the organization.
