Steinmeier, Zelensky clarify 'past misunderstandings' in telephone call - German presidential office

KYIV. May 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) - German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke by telephone on Thursday, the German presidential office said on Thursday.

"Both presidents found the conversation to be 'very important and very good'. Past misunderstandings have been clarified. Both presidents agreed to remain closely in touch," it said.

Andriy Yermak, chief of the Ukrainian presidential office, confirmed on Telegram that Zelensky spoke by telephone with Steinmeier on Thursday. "Germany remains a strong ally of Ukraine," and "the hope of the Russians for a division in Europe's unity in supporting Ukraine is futile."

Steinmeier has been criticized in Germany for his close ties with Moscow.
