Ukraine sends first completed part of EU membership questionnaire to European Commission - deputy PM

KYIV. April 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukraine has completed the first section of the questionnaire for accession to the European Union and has passed it to the European Commission for consideration, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanyshyna said.

"In furtherance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's instruction, we prepared the answers within a week and handed the first completed part of the questionnaire to the European Commission today. The second part will be prepared as soon as possible. We analyzed all the latest questionnaires that the European Commission gave to other states. It helped us prepare the answers as promptly as possible," Stefanyshyna was quoted as saying by her press service.

The EU membership questionnaire consists of two sections, one of which deals with political and economic criteria, and the second part assesses the extent to which Ukrainian legislation complies with the EU's legal acts, according to the press service.

"After receiving the Ukrainian side's answers to the questionnaire, the European Commission will offer the European Council its opinion as to the extent to which Ukraine meets the Copenhagen criteria and will give its recommendation whether to grant the country candidate status. After that, at a European Council meeting, the EU leaders, guided by the European Commission's opinion, will have to adopt a final decision on granting us the EU candidate status," the press service said.
