Population grows to 13 mln in Moscow, 5.6 mln in St. Petersburg - Rosstat, based on population census

MOSCOW. April 8 (Interfax) - Tentative results of a Russian population census held between October 15 and November 14, 2021, indicate that Moscow had a population of roughly 13 million as of October 1, 2021, up from 11.7 million recorded in the population census of October 2010, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) told reporters.

The population of St. Petersburg was preliminarily estimated at 5.6 million as of October 1, 2021, versus 4.9 million in October 2010, Rosstat said.

The population of the Moscow region grew from 7.7 million in 2010 to nine million as of October 1, 2021, it said.

The Krasnodar Territory saw population growth from 5.2 million in October 2010 to 5.8 million as of October 1, 2021.

These four regions have seen the largest population growth since 2010 due to their appeal to migrants, Rosstat said.
