Azerbaijani proposes setting up global fund to counter landmine threat - presidential aide

BAKU. April 1 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan has proposed establishing a global fund to counter the threat posed by landmines, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev said.

"The landmine threat is one of the most pressing problems for Azerbaijan. The liberated lands of Azerbaijan are today among the most landmine-contaminated territories in the world," Hajiyev said at the Humanitarian Demining Activities and Sustainable Development Goals international conference in Baku on Friday.

The Azerbaijani government is open to all forms of joint work, he said.

"From this standpoint, we believe that our country is a useful platform for regular annual discussions and assessments of global demining activity. As a result of today's conference, we also expect to come to the idea of establishing a global specialized fund to support the Azerbaijani government's efforts aimed at countering the threat posed by landmines," Hajiyev said.
