Number of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova decreases to 96,000

CHISINAU. March 31 (Interfax) - A total of 353,663 citizens of Ukraine have arrived in Moldova since February 24, the flow of refugees has now considerably decreased, Dumitru Udrea, General Secretary of the Government of Moldova, said.

"More than 100,000 refugees remained in Moldova all this time. This number has now decreased. There are 96,243 refugees on the territory of Moldova, of which 47% are minors. More than 2,000 children have gone to schools and kindergartens. Some 50,000 refugees have been accommodated in more than 100 centers nationwide, the others are living with families," Udrea said at a briefing on Thursday.

According to his information, more than 60,000 refugees were provided with motor, aviation and railroad transport to leave for the countries of the European Union and Turkey.

"Of all refugees, 5,918 people have requested asylum. More than 3,000 of them are citizens of Ukraine, and the rest are citizens of other states who were evacuated from Ukraine," he said.

Humanitarian assistance worth seven million euro from the EU alone has reached Moldova since the start of the refugee crisis, and there is 58 million lei (more than $3 million) on the Finance Ministry's special account, he said.

The Moldovan parliament declared a state of emergency in the country due to the situation in Ukraine for a period of 60 days starting from February 24.

Russia launched "a special military operation" in Ukraine on February 24.
