Russian Supreme Court dismisses Navalny's appeal for reviewing replacement of his suspended sentence with real jail time in Yves Rocher case

MOSCOW. March 30 (Interfax) - The Russian Supreme Court has turned down a cassation appeal of opposition activist Alexei Navalny for a review of the replacement of his suspended sentence with real jail time in the so-called Yves Rocher case.

"The court has denied a case review in a cassation panel," the Supreme Court told Interfax.

The court made a similar decision on Navalny's appeal for reviewing a court order that put him in a detention facility upon his return from Germany.

Navalny flew from Germany, where he was treated for a presumed poisoning, on January 17, 2021, and was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport upon arrival. The next day, the Khimki City Court upheld a motion from the Federal Penitentiary Service at a visiting session at a Khimki police station and put Navalny in a detention facility.

Later on, Moscow's Simonovsky District Court upheld a motion from the Federal Penitentiary Service and replaced Navalny's suspended sentence of three and a half years with real jail time over repeat violations of the restrictions and obligations of the opposition activist.

Navalny is serving time in a penitentiary in Pokrov.

Moscow's Lefortovsky District Court held a visiting session at the penitentiary on March 22, 2022, and sentenced Navalny to nine years in a high-security penitentiary on counts of fraud and contempt of court and with due account of the penalties imposed on him in a number of other proceedings.

Navalny is also a defendant in criminal cases of the establishment of an extremist network and an organization infringing on the personality and rights of citizens.

Back in January 2022, Navalny was added to the list of individuals and organizations involved in terrorist and extremist activity.
