Ukrainians will be able to exchange cash hryvni in Polish banks - National Bank of Ukraine

KYIV. March 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The National Bank of Ukraine and the National Bank of Poland have signed an agreement that allows Ukrainian citizens currently in Poland to exchange their hryni for zlotys.

"The agreement enters into force on March 25 of this year. From this day, Ukrainians will be able to exchange cash hryvni for Polish zlotys at offices of Polish banks. The exchange rate will be as close to the official one as possible. Through this mechanism, adult Ukrainian citizens will be able to exchange up to 10,000 hryvni per person. Polish banks will accept 100-hryvnia and 1,000-hryvnia banknotes," the press service for the National Bank of Ukraine said on Tuesday evening.

The National Bank of Poland will buy Polish commercial banks' cash hryvi that Ukrainian citizens exchange for zlotys and will then exchange them with the National Bank of Ukraine using the same exchange rate. The National Bank of Ukraine is ready to buy back up to ten billion hryvni from the National Bank of Poland as part of assistance to Ukrainian citizens.

The NBU press service said earlier on Wednesday that it had signed a currency swap agreement with the National Bank of Poland to facilitate a transaction of hryvnia/$ for up to $1 billion in equivalent.

"The money received within the scope of the currency swap will make it possible to expand international reserves and support Ukraine's macrofinancial resilience," the NBU press service quoted NBU Deputy Governor Yuriy Heletiy as saying.

In its turn, ОТР Bank launched a program for individuals to exchange the Ukrainian currency, hryvna, in cash in the lender's offices in Hungary, the press service for the Independent Association of Ukrainian Banks (NABU) said.

Ukrainians can also exchange hryvni in Austria at the offices of Raiffeisen Bank and Erste Bank Oesterreich, NABU said in a statement.

The service is also available in Moldova at the offices of OTP Bank and in Romania at Banca Comersiala Romana.
