Australia bans alumina, bauxite exports to Russia

WASHINGTON. March 21 (Interfax) - Australia has imposed a ban on exports of alumina and bauxite to Russia as part of the sanctions against Moscow, the Australian government announced on Sunday.

"The Government has overnight imposed an immediate ban on Australian exports of alumina and aluminium ores (including bauxite) to Russia, which will limit its capacity to produce aluminium - a critical export for Russia," the statement said.

The government added that it "will work closely with exporters and peak bodies that will be affected by the ban to find new and expand existing markets."

It also said that Australia will donate at least 70,000 tonnes of thermal coal to Ukraine following a request for assistance from the government of Ukraine, supported by the government of Poland, and discussions with other European partners. "The Australian Government has worked with the Australian coal industry to source supplies," the statement said.

Australia also announced it will provide $22 million of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and $15.5 million worth of military assistance, and issue humanitarian visas to Ukrainian refugees that will allow them to work, study and access healthcare.
