Zelensky discusses Ukraine's movement toward EU membership with Michel

KYIV. March 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President of the European Council Charles Michel have discussed Ukraine's movement toward European Union membership.

Zelensky tweeted on Friday that he had discussed with Michel further support to Ukraine. "Special attention was paid to our movement towards membership in the EU," Zelensky said.

Michel, in turn, revealed that he had shared with Zelensky his view on how the EU is collectively stepping up support to Ukraine. "Discussed concrete elements in ongoing negotiations between Ukraine and Russia," Michel wrote on Twitter. The EU will continue to support Ukraine, he said.

In addition, Michel said that the idea of creating a fund of solidarity with Ukraine to help provide basic services and meet the immediate needs of the people was discussed during their conversation.

"Supporting the creation of a Ukraine Solidarity Fund to help provide basic services and meet citizens' immediate needs. The Fund would give liquidity for continued support to authorities and in longer term serve as backbone for reconstruction of a free and democratic Ukraine. Partners could contribute to the USF through an international donors conference," Michel said.
