Zelensky suggests creating union of responsible states for promptly halting conflicts in world

KYIV. March 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the creation of a new association of states, U-24. United for Peace.

Speaking via a video link with the U.S. Congress on Wednesday, he said that "the institutions that should be protecting us from war [...] do not work." And that means new institutions and unions are needed, he said.

"And we suggest creating the association U-24. United for Peace. A union of responsible states with the strength and conscience to stop conflicts. Immediately. To provide all necessary assistance within 24 hours. If necessary, with weapons. If necessary, with sanctions. Humanitarian support. Political support. Money. Everything that is needed to maintain peace," he said.

In addition, Zelensky said such an association "could also provide assistance to those who are affected by natural disasters, manmade disasters, those affected by a humanitarian crisis or an epidemic."

In his address Zelensky once again called on Washington to impose a "humanitarian" no-fly zone over Ukraine and, if possible, supply Kyiv with weapons similar to S-300 air defense missile systems.

"We need a humanitarian no-fly zone," he said.

If such an option is impossible, in this case Ukraine needs "more defensive weapons like S-300" systems, Zelensky said.

"You yourselves know what weapons we need," he added.

The Ukrainian president also believes that the U.S. should continue imposing sanctions on Russia.

"I call on you to do more. New packages of sanctions are needed all the time, every week, until the Russian military machine stops," Zelensky said, asking U.S. Congress members to push for U.S. companies' withdrawal from the Russian market.

"We ask the U.S. to impose sanctions on all political figures of the Russian Federation who remain in official positions and do not sever ties with those who are responsible for the aggression against Ukraine. Starting with State Duma deputies and to the last public servant," Zelensky said.

Zelensky also called on U.S. companies to leave the Russian market.

"All American companies should quit Russia... If in electoral districts you have companies which sponsor the Russian military machine, by quitting business in Russia ... you must exert pressure to ensure that the Russian state does not get a single dollar," he said.
