Demand to restrict access to Meta online resources in Russia doesn't apply to WhatsApp - source

MOSCOW. March 11 (Interfax) - The demand to restrict access in Russia to the Meta online resources (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), as insisted on by the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, does not apply to the WhatsApp messenger, a source close to the supervisory agency told Interfax.

"The WhatsApp messenger is a means of communication not used for public posting, so the blocking does not concern it," the source said.

Earlier, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said that it had filed an application to the court to designate Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization and ban its activities in Russia.

The supervisory agency substantiated its position with regard to the dissemination of information materials containing calls to commit violent acts against Russians, including military personnel.
