Action, rather than forecasts, needed to minimize economic risks - Peskov

MOSCOW. March 10 (Interfax) - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has refused to say whether prices may be frozen in Russia.

Journalists asked Peskov at a press conference on Thursday whether a probability of that scenario was high.

"As to a price freeze, I will leave the question unanswered for now. We have the government headquarters led by the prime minister, and everything necessary will be done to achieve stabilization," Peskov said.

Journalists also asked how the authorities were going to contain inflation.

"As to inflation, indeed, the external fallout has been quite shocking for our economy, there are negative implications, they will be minimized. The situation is quite turbulent, but efforts have already been taken to achieve stabilization, and further measures are under consideration," Peskov said.

Journalists asked whether the Kremlin agreed with some economists that the inflation rates might grow further.

"It is an absolutely thankless task to make any forecasts now, or rather, take a wild guess. Because the situation is completely unprecedented. There has never been such an economic war as the one waged on our country. So, it is hard to forecast anything. We should not make any forecasts but act in order to minimize the negative consequences and further risks," Peskov said.
