Peskov: law on penalties for attempts to discredit Russian army adopted because of info war started against Russia

MOSCOW. March 5 (Interfax) - The law carrying penalties for attempts to discredit the Russian Armed Forces, including calls to this effect, has been adopted in response to the unprecedented information war that has been unleashed against Russia, the Kremlin said.

When asked by journalists during a conference call to comment on the aforementioned law, which was signed by the Russian president, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, "The law has been adopted and must be implemented. Our parliament voted for it. It is a difficult time now, you see that the law was needed and was urgently needed in connection with the absolutely unprecedented information war, not even campaign, that has been unleashed against our country."

"Against the backdrop of the information war, it was necessary to adopt such a tough law, and it was done," Peskov said.

Upon being asked how Russian citizens may express their opinion if it does not coincide with the official position, he said, "Within the framework of the law."

Peskov also referred all questions about the interpretation of this law to legal experts.

"The only thing that can be said in this case is that the law has been adopted and must be implemented," he said.
