Red Cross ready to help organize humanitarian corridors in Ukraine

MOSCOW. March 4 (Interfax) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICR) is ready to act as an intermediary in the matter of organizing humanitarian corridors in Ukraine, its press service said.

"We maintain contact with all sides to remind them of their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure our ability to protect those affected by the conflict and to respond to humanitarian needs," an ICRC spokesperson told Interfax on Friday, commenting on Kyiv's claims that the effort was mediated by the ICRC.

The ICRC said it would welcome "any initiative that gives civilians respite. The parties to the conflict should assist the humanitarian work by providing safe access to supplies and aid and by allowing safe and voluntary passage for those who wish to leave. The ICRC is ready to act as a neutral mediator and provide support within its capabilities," the spokesperson said.
