Tokayev orders modernization of Kazakh army due to current military security threats

NUR-SULTAN. March 2 (Interfax) - Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has held a meeting with the top brass on issues relating to further development of the army, the presidential press service said.

"Tokayev has ordered the top brass to modernize the structure and composition of the Armed Forces due to current military security threats. The president spoke about the need for improvement of the military command system using modern digital approaches," the press service said.

The meeting also discussed issues relating to re-equipment of the Kazakh army with modern and high-tech weapons and military hardware.

The Defense Ministry was ordered to revise its combat training program with the introduction of new methods for utilizing troops.

The president emphasized issues relating to the development of the military command and personnel policies to boost servicemen's professional level, and career growth based on the principle of meritocracy. The president spoke about the need to elevate the status of servicemen as well as the prestige of military service, and to motivate young people to fulfil their military duty.

"The Supreme Commander-in-Chief said in the meeting that the Armed Forces should defend the interests of the state and the security of each of its citizens," the press release said.
