ECHR orders Russia not to attack civilians, civilian infrastructure in Ukraine

STRASBOURG. March 1 (Interfax) - The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has granted Ukraine's request to ask Russia not to attack civilians and civilian infrastructure during its current special military operation, the court said in a statement.

"Today, the European Court of Human Rights has decided to indicate to the Government of Russia to refrain from military attacks against civilians and civilian objects, including residential premises, emergency vehicles and other specially protected civilian objects such as schools and hospitals, and to ensure immediately the safety of the medical establishments, personnel and emergency vehicles within the territory under attack," the statement said.

At issue are the urgent measures in accordance with Rule 39 of the ECHR regulations, which allows such measures to be indicated in the event of a threat of infliction of irreparable damage.

The measures were introduced at Ukraine's request of February 28, 2022, the ECHR said.

The court also asks the Russian government to inform of the measures it has taken to ensure full compliance with the Human Rights Commission as soon as possible.

The Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers will also be informed of the measures.
