Russian air defense units hold exercise to drill defending airspace in Sakhalin, Kurils

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. March 1 (Interfax) - Russian air defense units including the crews of S-400 Triumf and S-300B4 air defense missile systems have held a training session to drill defending airspace in Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, the press service for the Eastern Military District (EMD) said on Tuesday.

"The purpose of the training was to practice actions in a situation where the mock enemy's aerial vehicles violate air boundaries within the responsibility area in a range of altitudes," the EMD said.

The stand-by shifts of missile systems detected aerial vehicles during the training. After a superior command post gave a training air raid alarm, air defense combat crews drilled a series of practical actions to repel an air strike, it said.

"The timely search, detection and identification of the approaching air assault weapons of the mock enemy made it possible to swiftly perform training (electronic) launches of missiles on all targets," it said.

Devices installed in said air defense missile systems modeled the flights of airborne targets for training purposes, the EMD said.
