Memorial Society asks Russian Supreme Court to halt its liquidation following ECHR judgement

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - The Memorial International Historical, Educational, Charitable, and Human Rights Society (designated as a foreign agent NGO in Russia) has filed a petition with the Russian Supreme Court on the basis of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judgment, seeking the suspension of its liquidation, the society's executive director Yelena Zhemkova told reporters on Monday.

"Just now, we once again lodged a motion demanding that the ECHR's judgment be taken into account in order to halt the execution of the court ruling which has already entered into effect," Zhemkova said.

In accordance with the law, the Memorial Society is starting the liquidation procedure, which includes convening a meeting of the NGO's founding body, repaying all debts, paying the wages to its staff, and other steps, she said.
