Russian Supreme Court appeals panel upholds ruling to shut down Memorial society

MOSCOW. Feb 28 (Interfax) - The appeals panel for administrative cases of the Russian Supreme Court has upheld the ruling to shut down the International Memorial historical and educational society (designated as a foreign-agent NGO in Russia) at the request of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, an Interfax correspondent said.

"The Russian Supreme Court ruling of December 28, 2021 is upheld," the appellate court ruling reads.

The court thus dismissed Memorial's appeal seeking the first-instance court ruling to be overturned as unlawful and unfounded, and a new ruling to be handed down in the case to dismiss the request of the Prosecutor General's Office.

The Prosecutor General's Office sought the court to uphold the decision and dismiss Memorial's appeal.

As reported, according to the first-instance court ruling, "the International Civic Organization, the International Historical and Educational, Charitable and Human Rights Society Memorial and its regional branches and other structural organizations" are subject to shutdown.

Following the appeals court ruling, the decision has come into legal force and is to be enforced.
