Uzbekistan affirms neutrality in relation to Russian action in Ukraine

TASHKENT. Feb 26 (Interfax) - Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev hopes the situation in Ukraine will be settled quickly; on this issue the position of Uzbekistan is neutral, the president's spokesperson and deputy head of his administration, Sherzod Asadov, said on Telegram on Saturday.

During their telephone conversation on Friday Russian President Vladimir Putin informed his Uzbek counterpart as to what caused and contributed to the decision to carry out the special operation, Asadov said on Telegram.

"For his part, the leader of Uzbekistan expressed his hope that the sides will soon find mutually acceptable ways to settle the situation and prevent it escalating further. I would like to note in particular that Uzbekistan has taken a considered, neutral position on this issue," Asadov said.

He also stressed Uzbekistan's traditionally close friendship with both Russia and Ukraine.

"We are keen on peace, stability and sustainable development in our vast region. Whatever disputes and differences arise should be resolved entirely in accordance with international law," Asadov said.
