Russia to retaliate to EU's sanctions, won't account to anyone - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax) - Russia will retaliate to the European Union's sanctions and will not account to anyone for its actions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"We'll be retaliating to sanctions as we have always done, and we'll be doing the rest in a way beneficial to us, and we don't see fit to make excuses, or explain something, or somehow account for something anymore," Zakharova said on Channel One on Friday, when asked to comment on the EU's sanctions on Russia, including personal sanctions against President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Answering whether there are any contacts between Russia and the United States at the working level at the moment, Zakharova said, "They [the U.S.] are displaying their weakness by applying sanctions. Sanctions are a sign of weakness and inability to use diplomacy, politics, negotiations, own achievements, economic progress, or something else [...] to demonstrate one's superiority."

"There is none of this. Sanctions is the only thing that's left," she said.
