Facebook access restricted from Feb 25 for censoring Russian media - regulator

MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax) - Access to the social media website Facebook in Russia will from now on be partially restricted for its censoring of Russian media outlets, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomandzor) said on Friday.

"On February 25 the Prosecutor General's Office, upon agreement with the Foreign Ministry, decided to recognize that Facebook was involved in violation of the fundamental human rights and liberties and the rights and liberties of Russian citizens. In accordance with the Prosecutor General's Office decision on the social networking website Facebook, from February 25, 2022 Roskomnadzor will take measures to partially restrict access in accordance with the law," the agency said.

It said that on February 24 Roskomnadzor demanded that Meta Platforms, Inc. explain and lift the restrictions it imposed on Russian media. "That demand was ignored by the owners of the social media site," the regulator said.
