Russia plans to launch production of 60,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen by 2025

MOSCOW. Feb 11 (Interfax) - The plan to implement Russia's low-carbon development strategy provides for the launch of at least five low-carbon hydrogen production facilities by 2025, a source familiar with the document told Interfax.

The facilities should produce at least 60,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year. There are plans to carry out projects for the production of green and clean hydrogen, obtained by electrolysis of water and from hydrocarbons, respectively.

Work on a feasibility study for the projects should be completed in Q2 2022 and construction should begin in Q1 2023.

It is also anticipated that at least nine experimental and pilot plants, reference materials and catalysts will be created in Russia by the end of 2024. For this purpose, research and development will be carried out in the field of transportation, as well into technologies to separate hydrogen from a mixture of gases.

There are plans in Q2 2030 to put into trial operation a project to produce ammonia from coal. The feasibility study is to be completed by the end of 2023, with construction to start in the first quarter of 2025.

The government plans to draft proposals on measures to support hydrogen projects in Q2 2022.

The plan for implementing the low-carbon development strategy assumes that Russia will consume 160,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen by 2030, as well as control 20% of the international hydrogen trade market, compared with 10% in 2024.

The Industry and Trade Ministry has published an atlas of Russian projects for the production of low-carbon and carbon-free hydrogen and ammonia. The document contains 41 projects in 21 regions of Russia. Companies planning to implement them include Rosatom, Rusnano, Lukoil , En+ Group, Tatenergo, H4Energy, Gazprom Energoholding, Novatek , Energy Fund, North Star, SUEK, AFK Sistema and others.
