Kremlin not considering nationwide lockdown, but regions may impose restrictions due to Covid-19

MOSCOW. Jan 18 (Interfax) - The Kremlin is not considering any possible nationwide lockdown due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, but individual regions may impose such restrictions if need be, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"No nationwide lockdowns are under consideration," Peskov said.

"As regards individual elements of such restrictions or a lockdown itself at the regional level, it is possible, as the regions' heads have such special powers," he said.

"The situation may vary from region to region," Peskov said.

"The situation is changing quite fast due to the specifics of the Omicron strain. Therefore, the governors are effectively carrying out their powers," he said.
