Covid-19 cases spike to 31,252 in Russia in past 24 hours - HQ

MOSCOW. Jan 18 (Interfax) - Russia has registered 31,252 new cases of Covid-19 and 688 deaths in the past 24 hours, the coronavirus response headquarters said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Over the past day, 31,252 Covid-19 cases were confirmed in 85 regions of Russia, including 5,037 asymptomatic cases identified proactively (16.1%)," the headquarters said.

This is the largest number of coronavirus infections seen by Russia since the beginning of last December. Coronavirus morbidity has been on the rise in all big cities of Russia. According to the headquarters, Moscow reported 8,342 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, which is the largest number since the beginning of this year and since October 28, 2021. There were 4,078 new cases in St. Petersburg and 2,754 in the Moscow region.

Meanwhile, coronavirus mortality has been on decline in Russia since the end of December. In the past 24 hours, 688 patients died from Covid-19 across the country. This is an uptick, compared to 670 deaths reported by the headquarters on Monday. There were 69 deaths in Moscow, 64 in St. Petersburg, and 34 in the Moscow region.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia, it has registered a total of 10,865,512 cases of Covid-19, including 322,678 deaths and 9,902,935 recoveries, including 24,564 persons discharged from hospital over the past day, 1,838 of them in Moscow.

Russia's consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Tuesday that Russia has performed more than 247.2 million Covid-19 diagnostic tests to date, including 324,000 over the past day. As many as 980,253 people remain under medical observation.
