Google, Meta facing fines of up to 10% of annual revenue, as new motions lodged with Russian court

MOSCOW. Dec 3 (Interfax) - A magistrates' court in Moscow has registered new administrative offense motions from the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) against Google and Facebook (a unit of Meta Platforms), which are now facing revenue-based fines.

"Roskomnadzor has lodged administrative offense motions with a justice of the peace from Judicial District No. 422 in Moscow's Tagansky district in regard to Google LLC and Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly known as Facebook Inc. )," a court representative told Interfax.

The companies are charged under Part 5 Article 13.41 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses (a repeat failure of an Internet resource owner to remove information whenever the removal of such information is required by law). The offense is punishable with a fine of 5% to 10% of the overall revenue in a calendar year preceding the calendar year of the administrative offense.

The hearings will be held on December 24.
