Putin speaks in favor of balanced Internet regulation

MOSCOW. Nov 30 (Interfax) - Elements of the regulation of web platforms and the Internet should not hinder the activity of IT companies, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"As for Russia, we will act consistent with our realities. True, Russia needs certain elements of [Internet] regulation, but they shouldn't hinder economic activities," Putin said at the Russia Calling VTB Capital Investment Forum.

China has been tightening control over web platforms due to their increased significance to the national economy and political and social life, he said.

"There is nothing surprising or unusual about that. Doesn't Europe act likewise? Doesn't the United States talk about that? In fact, the whole world does. The only question is the scope of regulations," Putin said.

It is necessary to keep a balance between free enterprise, the dissemination of information, and the interests of a nation and its citizens, so that web platforms do not abuse anything, he said.
