Armenia plans to start building new nuclear power plant in 2026-2027

YEREVAN. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Armenia plans to start building a new nuclear power plant in 2026-2027, Gnel Sanosyan, the country's territorial administration and infrastructure minister, said at a joint briefing with Alexei Likhachev, the head of Russia's Rosatom, at the site of the existing NPP in Armenia.

"There are of course plans to build a new nuclear power plant, there are discussions on this issue. We will continue to develop nuclear energy and we believe that the nuclear power generating process should not stop for a single day," Sanosyan said.

He said Armenia planned to put the new plant into service when the existing one stops operating in 2036.

"We think work on a new power generating unit will start in 2026-2027. Negotiations and discussions are underway with Rosatom, and we'll prepare the construction documents in future. There is no final decision on capacity yet - we think told Interfax will be at least 400-450 MW, but this is a matter for discussion," he said.
