Former director of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Bryukhanov dies

KYIV. Oct 14 (Interfax) - Viktor Bryukhanov, first director of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, who led the plant in April 1986 when the Chernobyl disaster occurred, died on October 13, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant press service said.

"Viktor Bryukhanov, first director of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, has died at the age of 84. The staff and the administration of the enterprise offer their deep condolences to his relatives and loved ones," a statement posted on Facebook said.

Bryukhanov was the director of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1970-1986. He was suspended from his post after the accident in the fourth power unit of the plant and was deputy head of the production-technical department of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant from July 1986 to July 1987. He was sentenced to ten years in prison for violations of safety regulations at hazardous production facilities and enterprises in 1988.

In 1991, he was released on parole and continued working at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant as head of the technical department. He had worked for Ukrinterenergo since 1992.
