Russia successfully performs first test-launch of Tsirkon missile from sub - Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Oct 4 (Interfax) - The Russian Navy has performed the first test-launch of a Tsirkon hypersonic missile from a submarine; all previous Tsirkon test-launches were performed from a surface ship.

"The Russian Navy has performed the first test-launch of a Tsirkon hypersonic missile from the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine. The missile aimed at a mock seaborne target in the Barents Sea waters," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

"According to the surveillance systems, the missile flight complied with the designated parameters, and the missile hit the mock target. The test-launch of a Tsirkon missile from a nuclear sub was declared successful," the ministry said.

The ministry published a video of the Tsirkon missile launch from a submarine on Monday morning. The video shows the missile being fired at night.

Earlier, the ministry reported successful test-launches of Tsirkon missiles from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate of the Northern Fleet. In particular, the launches were performed in July 2021, as well as in December, November and October 2020.
