Parliament formed in Moldova

CHISINAU. July 29 (Interfax) - Three factions have been formed in the new parliament of Moldova at the founding session of the parliament, which began on Monday and continues on Thursday, an Interfax correspondent has reported.

It has been declared that there is a majority and an opposition, the Interfax correspondent reported.

The parliament will have three factions: Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) - 63 deputies, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists - 32 deputies, and Shor - six deputies.

The PAS parliamentary faction will be led by Mihail Popsoi, his deputies will be Vladimir Bolia, Veronica Rosca, Doina Gherman, and Lilian Carp, the secretary of the faction will be Artur Mija. The Bloc of Communists and Socialists faction will be led by Socialist Zinaida Greceanii, her deputies will be Corneliu Furculita (the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova) and Constantin Staris (the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova), the faction's secretary will be Vasilii Bolia (the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova). The Shor faction will be led by Ilan Shor, Petru Jardan will become his deputy, and the faction's secretary will be Marina Tauber.

The PAS faction has also declared the formation of an absolute parliamentary majority. The Bloc of Communists and Socialists said it is joining the opposition. The Shor faction said it will act as "a constructive opposition."

The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which was chaired by Maia Sandu before she took office as president at the end of last year, won a confident victory in the parliamentary election in Moldova on July 11. PAS received 52.8% of the votes. It is followed by the Bloc of Communists and Socialists with 27.17% and the Shor party with 5.74% of the votes.

This means that PAS can independently form the government and bodies of executive authority. The parliament speaker, the vice-speakers, the permanent bureau and the heads of the permanent parliamentary commissions will be elected on Thursday. After that, the president will hold consultations with the factions and will nominate a candidate for the post of prime minister.

According to earlier reports, PAS Deputy Chairman Igor Grosu will become parliament speaker and PAS Deputy Chairperson and former Finance Minister Natalia Gavrilita will become prime minister.
