Russia will have to reinforce Tajik-Afghan border - Duma deputy
MOSCOW. July 9 (Interfax) - The situation in Afghanistan is developing in an unfavorable way, and Moscow is likely to have to take steps to reinforce the Tajik-Afghan border to secure itself distantly, State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee deputy head Alexei Chepa said.
"We will have to reinforce our border now in any case, and we'll have to reinforce the border with Afghanistan in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. And this will seal our border distantly. I think we'll have to do that. The situation is very tense," Chepa told Interfax on Friday.
This reinforcement could be accomplished "in the form of technical or physical support," he said.
The fact that the Taliban (banned in Russia) are closing in on ISIL (terrorist organization banned in Russia) militants in the northern part of Afghanistan does not provide any guarantees in itself that Russia's borders will be secure and the terrorist threat will vanish, he said.
"If we want to choose the lesser of two evils, it's hard to decide which one is the lesser and say that this one is better and the other one is worse. It's all evil. And it's a very serious situation for us: everything that's happening these days is happening not without some fine-tuning by the United States," Chepa said.
He also specified that further steps would depend on how events develop, but added that they are not developing in the most favorable way
