Court arrests Kazan school shooter for 2 months

KAZAN. May 12 (Interfax) - Ilnaz Galyaviyev, who is charged with an armed attack on a school in Kazan, has been arrested for two months, an Interfax correspondent reported from the courtroom on Wednesday.

"The investigators' motion is granted, Galyaviyev is arrested until July 11, 2021," the judge said when reading out the court ruling.

The investigator, insisting on the arrest of the defendant, noted that Galyaviyev's state of health did not prevent him from being held in custody. The prosecutor fully supported the investigators' motion.

The defendant pleaded guilty and did not object to the arrest.

Galyaviyev, a 19-year-old expelled from vocational school in April, went on a shooting spree at his former school, No. 175, in Kazan on Tuesday. The shooting left nine dead, including seven children and two teachers. A criminal case has been opened on counts of murder. The central staff of the Russian Investigative Committee is conducting the investigation. May 12 is a day of mourning in Tatarstan.
