Seven people convicted of treason, espionage in Russia last year - Supreme Court

MOSCOW. April 20 (Interfax) - Russian courts convicted seven people of treason or espionage, sentencing all of them to jail terms, in 2020, according to figures released by the Judicial Department of the Russian Supreme Court.

In particular, six people were convicted of high treason under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code and one for espionage under Article 276 in 2020, the Supreme Court's Judicial Department said.

All the convicts were sentenced to actual jail terms and are to spend from five to 20 years in a penal colony, according to the Supreme Court statistics. Three 'traitors' were fined as an additional penalty and ordered to pay the state a combined amount of 650,000 rubles.

No one charged with either high treason or espionage in Russia was acquitted last year, the Judicial Department said.

In 2019, 11 people were convicted of the same offenses in Russia, including eight for treason and three for espionage, with no acquittals for defendants in such cases, it said.
