Russian Railways makes first multimodal container shipment from China to Denmark via Kaliningrad
KALININGRAD. March 16 (Interfax) - The first multimodal shipment of containers from China to Denmark has been carried out on the Kaliningrad Railway (KZD), a division of Russian Railways (RZD) , KZD reported.
"The first train with clothing, fittings, medical masks and consumables, tires, industrial equipment and home appliances from the Chinese city of Xian arrived at Kaliningrad-Sortirovochny station. The containers were delivered to the Kaliningrad commercial seaport for loading onto a vessel and shipment to the Danish port of Fredericia," KZD said.
The 100 TEU of freight was shipped from China to Kaliningrad by the railways of several countries in seven days, which is faster than by sea.
KZD is carrying out this project in partnership with UTLC ERA and European companies DB Cargo and Mann Lines Multimodal. At the end of last year, KZD and its partners made the first multimodal delivery of containers from China to Norway, and before that from China to Germany. The first trainload of containers from China to Finland was shipped by KZD through the port this month.
RZD, UTLC ERA, TransContainer and seaports in Kaliningrad Region plan to actively implement long-term plans to increase container shipments from Asia to Europe through the Baltic exclave to 1.2 million TEU by 2024.
Shipments between China and Europe via KZD infrastructure surged 360% to 47,500 TEU in 2020. However, KZD's overall freight turnover slumped 4.7% to 12.579 million tonnes.
