Slowdown to impact Twitter, which earns 4 bln rubles per year from advertising in Russia - Duma member
MOSCOW. March 12 (Interfax) - Twitter earns 3-4 billion rubles every year from advertising in Russia, so slowing Twitter's speed is effective leverage, Anton Gorelkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies, and Communication, said.
"Clearly, foreign platforms do not disclose their earnings from advertising on local markets; all they disclose is global turnover. However, according to various estimates, Twitter is earning several billion rubles here. Some say the numbers reach 3-4 billion rubles," Gorelkin said at a roundtable with the theme 'Forced Slowdown of Twitter - Conclusions to Be Drawn by All.'
The actions taken by telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor in regard to Twitter are "practically non-invasive" and do not infringe on users, but, "on the other hand, they have an impact on the advertising profits of this foreign platform in Russia," he said.
"This is the right thing to do, which falls in line with the concept pursued by the Russian authorities in regard to foreign platforms," Gorelkin said.
