Armenian govt files application against Azerbaijan with ECHR
YEREVAN. Feb 2 (Interfax) - The Armenian government has lodged an inter-state application with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), in which it claimed that Azerbaijan violated the European Convention on Human Rights during the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh last fall.
"The Armenian government has forwarded an inter-state application to the ECHR over convention violations committed by Azerbaijan during the 44-day war [in Nagorno-Karabakh in the fall of 2020] and the postwar period," the office of the Armenian representative at the ECHR said on Tuesday.
"The application also points to the need to protect the rights of the prisoners of war and other individuals held in Azerbaijan. This is the first inter-state application filed with the ECHR by Armenia," it said.
Armenian Human Rights Commissioner Arman Tatoyan and Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin have met in Yerevan to discuss steps to return Armenian prisoners from Azerbaijan, the ombudsman's press service said.
The military conflict in the Karabakh conflict zone began on September 27, 2020. On November 9, the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia adopted a trilateral statement on a ceasefire and the deployment of Russian peacekeepers, as well as the transfer of some areas in the region to Azerbaijan.
