Think tanks perform a number of important functions, such as studying topical problems in the economic, political and social spheres, assisting scientifically-based decision-making, and participating in elaborating long-term development strategies. Their role is no less important in promoting international cooperation and settling differences between states.

The number of think tanks has been constantly growing, and there are more than 8,000 of them in various parts of the world. Their significance for the functioning of states, transnational corporations, and civil society has been growing as well.

Over the past few decades, Russia has formed an independent expert and analytical community that has gained wide international recognition. The joint project of IMEMO and Interfax will center on the positions of Russian think tanks in the global context, key areas of their activity, prospects for their development and challenges they are facing.

'Russia and the World: A Professional Conversation' is a new joint project of IMEMO and Interfax. A series of expert meetings dedicated to the most important events in global politics and economics take part within the project's framework. Discussions involving scientists, public figures, and officials take place monthly in an online format and broadcast on YouTube.
