Daily number of Covid-19 cases in Russia exceeds 16,000 for first time since pandemic started - HQ

MOSCOW. Oct 20 (Interfax) - Russia has recorded its highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases since the onset of the pandemic and has registered 269 associated deaths in the past 24 hours, the coronavirus response headquarters said on Tuesday.

"Over the past day, 16,319 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in 84 regions of Russia, including 4,664 active asymptomatic cases (28.6%)," the headquarters said.

The prevalence of Covid-19 began growing in Russia in September, when the daily number of new infections increased from 5,000 to 10,000 by the beginning of October and then soared to up to 15,000 new cases per day over the subsequent two weeks, nearing 16,000 on October 19.

Growth is still the most significant in Moscow, which has seen 4,999 new coronavirus infection cases in the past 24 hours.

According to the headquarters, 1,960 coronavirus patients were discharged from hospitals and 49 patients died in Moscow over the past 24 hours.

Russia's total Covid-19 case count since the onset of the pandemic stands at 1,431,635 (+1.2%) in 85 regions. The overall related death toll is at 24,635. A total of 1,085,608 people have recovered over this period, including 9,704 in the past 24 hours, the headquarters said.

Russia has conducted more than 54.6 million Covid-19 diagnostic tests since the pandemic broke out, including 374,000 in the past 24 hours, the Russian Federal Service for Health and Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) said on Tuesday. A total of 316,569 people remain under medical observation.
