Prosecutors direct Kamchatka contamination check materials to Investigative Committee for opening criminal case

MOSCOW. Oct 7 (Interfax) - Materials of the check into water contamination in Kamchatka have been directed to the Russian Investigative Committee for opening a criminal case, the territorial prosecution service told Interfax.

"In furtherance of the inquiry, the Kamchatka territorial prosecution service has submitted materials to bodies of the Investigative Committee consistent with Article 37 of the Criminal Procedure Code for opening a criminal case over water contamination in the Kamchatka Territory," the agency said.

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office is monitoring the case, and the check is ongoing, it said.

Surfers said in late September that Pacific water changed color on the Khalaktyrsky Beach. They complained of puffy and reddened eyes and skin irritation after swimming. Local residents posted photos of dead sea animals, such as octopuses, urchins, and stars washed ashore, on the social media.
