Putin proposes online UN SC summit on JCPOA involving Germany, Iran

MOSCOW. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed convening an online summit of the permanent members of the UN Security Council with the participation of Germany and Iran in order to discuss the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iran nuclear deal.

"We propose promptly holding an online meeting of the leaders of the UN Security Council permanent members that would also involve the leadership of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The goal is to plan steps to avoid confrontation, any aggravation of the situation in the UN Security Council, and to provide collective support for the further uninterrupted implementation of UNSC Resolution 2231, which created the international legal basis for the implementation of the JCPOA," Putin said in a statement published on the Kremlin website on Friday.

"We also propose agreeing at the meeting on the parameters for joint work to form safe mechanisms for ensuring security and building confidence in the Gulf area. This can be achieved if all our countries and the countries of the region combine their political will and creative energy," he said.

"Further growth in tension and a rising risk of conflict" will be the alternative to holding a summit, Putin said.

"This scenario must be avoided. Russia is open to constructive interaction with everyone interested in pushing the situation away from the danger line," he said.

If the leaders are ready in principle to participate in such a discussion, Russia proposes swiftly agreeing on an agenda, organizational modalities and dates for the video summit, acting through the seven countries' foreign ministries, he said.

Putin went on to recall that in 2019, Russia presented an updated concept of security in the Gulf region, outlining specific methods "to effectively resolve the tangle of problems in this region."

"We are convinced that we can overcome the problems if approach the positions of each other with due attention and responsibility, acting respectfully and on a collective basis. In this region, like anywhere else in the world, there is no room for blackmail or diktat on anyone's part. One-sided approaches don't help the search for solutions. When building an integral framework for security in the Persian Gulf region, it is important to keep that positive baggage accumulated earlier by a great deal of effort," Putin said.
