Nornickel proposes to Rosprirodnadzor that volume of damage be clarified after fuel spill clean-up is complete

MOSCOW. Aug 5 (Interfax) - Nornickel has proposed to Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor) that the environmental damage from the fuel spill at the Norilsk TPP be finalized after the clean-up is complete. The company is hoping to secure an out-of-court settlement based on the conclusions of a joint working group with Rosprirodnadzor.

This is according to a letter sent by Nornickel's State Secretary and Vice President for Government Relations Dmitry Pristanskov to Rosprirodnadzor head Svetlana Radionova and seen by Interfax.

Nornickel and Rosprirodnadzor are cooperating in a working group created via a Natural Resources Ministry decree from July 30, according to the letter. The task of the working group is to prepare a road map for implementation of measures for clean-up of the fuel spill that took place in late May at TPP-3 in Norilsk.

"Joint work within the framework of the working group established by the Ministry of Natural Resources will allow us to determine the real picture of the oil spill response, to develop the most effective measures to restore the environment, to clarify both our approaches to solving the problem and the amount of damage caused," Pristanskov said in the letter.
