FSB reports preventing terrorist attack in Moscow, killing man planning it
MOSCOW. July 27 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has said it has prevented a terrorist attack at a crowded place in Moscow and killed a man from Central Asia who is suspected of planning it in an exchange of fire in the city of Khimki outside of Moscow.
"The Russian Federal Security Service, acting in collaboration with the Interior Ministry and the Investigative Committee, has curbed the activities of a member of a terrorist organization who was planning a terrorist attack at a crowded place in Moscow," the FSB press service told Interfax.
Security and law enforcement officials detected a suspicious man at an abandoned garage complex in Khimki, who opened fire from automatic firearms when they attempted to detain him, the press service said.
"The offender was neutralized (received fatal injuries) in the course of counteractions," it said.
Examining the scene of the incident, operatives found an AK-74U assault rifle, three loaded magazines, two F-1 grenades, and an RGD grenade on the man.
Searching the apartment rented by the offender, operatives found evidence proving that he was linked to emissaries of international terrorists in Syria and was preparing a massive shooting attack on ordinary citizens, the press service said.
It has now been established that the suspected terrorist was a citizen of a Central Asian country who was living in a rented apartment in Moscow, the press service said. "Additionally, his brother, who had been searching for his relative through his acquaintances for several days so as to prevent him from departing for the Syrian Arab Republic to join an international terrorist organization banned in the Russian Federation, has been detained in the Moscow region," it said.
Security agencies are currently searching for the man's possible accomplices, the press service said.
Olga Vradiy, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee department for the Moscow region, said a forensic medical and a ballistic study have been ordered in a criminal case opened on a count of attempt on the life of a law enforcement official.
