Putin thanks Russian citizens for support and confidence

NOVO-OGARYOVO, Moscow region. July 2 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked Russian citizens for their support and confidence following the vote on constitutional amendments.

"I would like to thank Russian citizens. Thank you very much for your support and confidence," Putin said in his opening remarks at a meeting of the Pobeda (Victory) organizing committee.

The president said he had repeatedly indicated a need for constitutional amendments for the purposes of improving the political system, formalizing social guarantees, and strengthening sovereignty, state integrity, and spiritual and moral values.

The Soviet Union broke up only a short time ago from a historical point of view, Putin said.

"Obviously, modern Russia is still going through a stage of formation, establishment. This is true of every aspect of our lives: the political system, the economy, etc. We are still very vulnerable, and as people say, lots of things still exist as a first draft," he said.

"We need domestic stability and time in order to strengthen the country and all of its institutions. So, once again, I am grateful to everyone who supported the amendments," Putin said.
