Four killed in shootout in Nazran prompted by family dispute over plot of land
MOSCOW. June 16 (Interfax) - A police officer, a Russian Guard member, and two local civilians died in a shootout in Nazran in the Russian internal republic of Ingushetia on Tuesday, an informed source told Interfax.
"Police Capt. Adam Medov, a district police officer of the Interior Ministry office for Nazran, and his cousin, a driver of an extra-departmental guard battalion of the Russian Guard's branch for the republic, have died of gunshot wounds," the source said.
Two civilians involved in the conflict were also killed, the source said. "Except for one civilian, all those killed are relatives. There are relatives from the Medov clan also among the seven wounded," the source said.
Another source told Interfax that the shootout in Nazran could have been prompted by a family conflict. "Tentative findings indicate that two relatives initiated an out-of-court land dispute with the use of firearms," the source said.
Each of the conflicting parties gathered supporters.
Law enforcement have yet to find out whether the men had licenses to possess firearms.
An informed source told Interfax that, based on preliminary findings, policeman Medov worsened the intra-clan conflict which had lasted for several days by stabbing his opponent. "After that, supporters of his opponent opened fire; one person was killed on the spot, and three others died in the republic's central hospital," the source said.
Officers from an anti-extremism center and investigators are working at the scene.
