Russian, Turkish foreign ministers reaffirm determination to assist with truce in Libya
MOSCOW. July 8 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke by telephone on Monday to discuss Libya, Syria, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and bilateral coordination against the backdrop of the gradual decline in Covid-19 globally.
"The mutual determination was reaffirmed to assist with creating conditions for reconciling the warring sides in Libya in the interest of a politico-diplomatic settlement under the UN aegis. The need was reaffirmed for swift appointment of a new UN Secretary-General's special representative for Libya," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on its website.
"In regard to the Syria situation, the [ministers] analyzed progress in the implementation of Russian -Turkish arrangements on the Idlib de-escalation area," the statement reads.
The ministers also called for a swift resolution of the deadlock in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process through direct negotiation brokered by the Quartet on the Middle East, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
The two sides also "discussed in substance the prospects of bilateral coordination in a variety of spheres against the backdrop of the gradual reduction in coronavirus infections globally," and "agreed on close coordination of their efforts to restore bilateral cooperation gradually," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
