Russia detects 8,849 new Covid-19 cases in past 24 hours, death toll tops 3,000 - HQ

MOSCOW. May 21 (Interfax) - Russia recorded 8,849 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a bit more than the day before, the coronavirus response headquarters said in a statement on Thursday.

"Over the past day, 8,849 Covid-19 cases were detected in 84 constituent territories of Russia, including 3,716 active asymptomatic cases (42%)," the headquarters said.

The headquarters reported 8,764 new cases on Thursday, as against over 10,500 on May 15. The downward trend is ongoing. The number of new cases grew 2.87% on May 21, and 2.92% on May 20.

By now, Russia has detected 317,554 coronavirus cases. According to the Johns Hopkins University, the top three of the global coronavirus table remains unchanged. The U.S. leads the anti-rating with more than 1.55 million coronavirus cases, Russia ranks second, and Brazil ranks third. It is rapidly catching up with Russia (291,500 cases with the daily increase in coronavirus cases by almost 20,000).

Moscow reported 2,913 new Covid-19 cases over the day, or slightly more than the day before (nearly 2,700). The total Covid-19 rate in Moscow grew to 155,219.

Some 127 coronavirus patients died across Russia over the past day, including 68 in Moscow, bringing the mortality rate to 3,099. The record number of daily deaths, 135, was reported on Wednesday.

The country saw 7,289 coronavirus recoveries, including 3,746 in Moscow, in the past 24 hours. The overall recovery rate stands at 92,681.
